The June 1978 edition of Honcho magazine featured two photo spreads shot by Roy Dean. One of them was of some rather unimpressive leather men, but the other was Canadian football player Blain Lamoureaux. Extending over 11 pages, it was quite a project, so let's take a look.
Honcho's premier issue was April, 1978. This was the third issue and the mag quickly became my favorite of "gay rags". So much so, I subscribed and never missed an issue for at least the next 10 years. I remember this issue fondly. Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteNo problem, and thanks for the added provenance.
DeleteAll I had growing up in South Carolina was Playgirl. I was 13 in 1973 when Playgirl premiered.
ReplyDeleteWhen I moved to Boston in 1982 at age 22, I was like a kid in a candy store with all the gay magazine options.
I vividly remember Honcho, Mandate, Blueboy, Torso, Inches, Bear, Playguy and all the rest including my beloved Playgirl which I continued to read 😉 until they stopped the full frontals in the late ‘80s.
I have no idea if these mags still exist.... but they were a life saver to me unti I stopped the one night stands and casual encounters when I met the guy who would become my partner in 1992.
It took a long time, but Playgirl did eventually admit that they were iconic among gay men.
DeleteThey still exist; you have to search harder for them now.....there's a used bookstore / memorabilia store in the Castro in SF that has tons of mags, including Honcho.
