The unaltered version of this photo of Jack Thomas looks a bit "washed out,"
and I'm not sure if that is due to how it was developed or due to deterioration over time.
There is a slight difference in the contrast in all the images where a strap has been drawn in. I think it must have been caused by the technique of printing the naked image, drawing in the strap and then rephotographing the retouched image...
Your observation is quite good, and the reason could be as you hypothesize. I would only note that I got these from two different sources, and one never knows what modern technical enhancements have been made along the way. I have been known to lighten images or remove yellowing to better show detail, but I disclose it when I do.
