This photo of the Stanford U. rowing team from about 1912
should make the Bum Brigade and its Belgian president happy.
Always a favorite photo of mine. A lineup of beautiful men! But does anyone have an opinion or knowledge about why they're all naked? Was it a photo op? Or was it common for certain college sports teams to practice naked in this era?
Good question. I've seen photos of rowing teams from that era practicing in shorts, but that doesn't mean that all of them did. Could it have been a gag? College boys love those.
As far as I have been able to establish, most rowing teams - as with swimming teams - in America and Britain trained naked and wore a pair of close-fitting wool shorts with what was then known in England as a "singlet" which was like a running vest, usually bearing the college, team or club logo. There is a photograph knocking about the internet of the Harvard rowing team from the early 1970s training in a gym dry-dock, their genitals where necessary blurred out, which I think was sourced to the magazine Time and demonstrates that the habit of training naked went on until the 1980s.
I believe that they knew that there would be in the future a passionate person of beautiful buttocks in Belgium. This is probably why they posed naked :-)

DeleteSorry, I should have said that the short and singlet strip was worn for competitions which necessarily took place in public as a spectator sport.
