This statue of Trajan is kind of beaten up, 
but it shows a fine male form.

  1. Superb male form. I assume the head was a good likeness of Trajan, but the body of a model. Is that a broken sword in his right hand? Lovely..

    1. Yes, that's the hilt of a sword. It looks like the blade was made as a separate piece with a plug hole to fit it into.

  2. Yes, this is damage. I can hardly imagine a statue would have been commissioned of Trajan following a bar brawl in the Subura. That notwithstanding, there seems to be a number of statues of him with a mutilated nose. Perhaps he did something inappropriate with it. Who knows?

    1. Considering their age and the chaos that surrounded the collapse of the Roman Empire, I suppose it's remarkable that we have as many undamaged sculptures from that era as we do.
