A helpful and kind new follower of this blog has requested a series on Butch magazine, and I'm only too glad to oblige. This publication appeared in the deluge of gay nudie magazines that sprang up when the U.S. courts liberalized the porn laws in the late 1960s. It was put out by DSI, the first gay multi-merchandising company, and I only recognize a few of the photography attributions in the early issues. None of the models are named, so there's more guessing to be done there.
Very odd that they didn't even create names for the models.
ReplyDeleteI agree. They did name models in some of their other publications. See James IV's comment below for some more info.
DeleteThis is David Mineric by AMG. The photo in the bottom left corner appeared on the cover of Physique Pictorial Vol 12 No 2 (Nov. 1962) and was the first of many photos of David to make PP magazine.
ReplyDeleteDavid also did several films at AMG, often playing the bad guy. I assumed Mizer was casting to type.
Great series today!
Thanks, James! I noticed quite a few "recycled" photos, so I'm not surprised that you could name some.
DeleteGreat collection of pictures, and very informative comments by the group. It makes you step back and realize how much gay publications have evolved since the late 60s. You also appreciate that guys like these, regardless of their motives, were real pioneers. Thanks for posting these.
ReplyDeleteIt was my pleasure to put this one together, Ian, and I'm pleased that you enjoyed it.
