I used this version of the 1923 cover with the Post's overlays
removed because it is the clearest copy I could find on line.
It's humorous, but has some telling historical elements.
Well, it's not really a pouch. There's a belt, and there's a strip of material that goes over the belt, between the legs, and over the belt on the other side.
Not to mention you can see the First American's pouch-packing inside the loose-fitting breechcloth/jock.

DeleteI've seen them referred to as a "breachclout" or type of loincloth.
