That device
Our last photo may (or may not) feature one of those devices for holding the model still.
In any case, that model is one fine example of masculinity.
Very often circus athletes would augment their income as artists' models...then photography made it far more graphic, but lucrative, due to mass resale. They could get copies printed and sell them in stag-shows (nude followup statue mimicry, fom men and boys only following the main strongman show
Yes, this is a well documented practice. Even the immortal Eugen Sandow did it to a limited extent. He would have private gatherings after his shows in which those who paid extra were given photos and allowed to view a posing session. Sometimes the customers were allowed to touch his arm muscles, too. Neither the photos nor Sandow were nude, however.

(While wintering over, they earned no money, so side hustles were a need.)
