Mirror
This painting of a man at a mirror is rather different from most of Tchetchilew's work.
No one seems to have a title for it, and a few experts question the attribution.
The figure in the mirror looks "healthier" than the other. The left hand figure is pale compared to his supposed reflection. The colours in the mirror don't match the ones on the left.
My interpretation: The artist is showing us what the young man would "like" to see in his reflection, rather than what he "actually" sees in his reflection--a more fit and vibrant young man (more flesh, brighter color palette) instead of the reedy and average reality (skinny body and muted colors). How many of us, at some time in our lives, have done that--wishing what we saw was different?
