How to

Tony Guyther wasn't the only physique photographer to publish a piece on how to do it,
but his choice of a cover pushed the limits for the time.

  1. It is today virtually unbelievable that a book cover with this Classical image would have been pushing the envelope at a point still within living memory. The Islamic injunction against idolatry has at certain times been taken far further than in the Judaism from which it derives. The Persian Ibn Sina (980 - 1037 CE), known in the West as Avicenna, is regarded as one of the greatest medical minds ever to have lived. As a result of the fundamentalism of his time, he was unable to draw body parts but got round the problem in his illustrations by turning the human form into a tree. I like the sturdy oak above.
