William, solo again
For whatever reason, there are far more solo shots of William than Fred Ritter.
This has led some observers to think that Fred might have been the better photographer.
I can't tell if Bill is doing chin-ups in this picture or just hanging there.
Their -and others'- studio shots use the light (lamps) to perfectly highlight the oiled musles. Beautifully sculptural. Outdoors - with natural light is something else completely. Also in nice summery weather outside, forest or waterside possibly sandy beach setting - I imagine intense oiling would be simply unpractical? Every single gust of wind could bring something of a crusy coating ;-)
He does not seem to be so heavily oiled in this shot as he/Fred are in others. I remember your saying oiling was common at that time.
ReplyDeleteAlmost all their outdoor shots don't seem to have the heavy oiling. Actually, most of them don't appear to have used oil at all.
