My lamented friend Mr. Scumbeast was English, but lived out the last years
of his life in Amsterdam. He gave me this photo, describing it as Dutch from 1937.
Most of Western Europe and North America had by that time abandoned the "singlet" style male swimming costume and most men were wearing swimming briefs, some briefer than can be seen today. The Netherlands seems to have been an exception for reasons of public modesty which are hard to explain. I have in fact a photograph of one hapless chap being fined by a police officer on a Dutch beach for breach of by-laws. Yes, they actually policed their beaches...
