1911 again
The musculature on this 1911 drawing by Valette is exceptional.
The French artist, Pierre Adolphe Valette, moved to England after art school and became fairly successful. He is best remembered in art circles, however, as English artist L.S. Lowry's tutor.
Thanks Jerry. I wasn't aware of the Lowry connection. The gentleman above certainly cuts a very different figure from Lowry's 'matchstick men''! That's not a criticism of Lowry, by the way, whose work I like.
This is lovely, I see Valette did several fine male nudes. Oh, to have that model's poise and musculature. Raising the usual question, how did he get like that. Valette then moved on to also excellent urban cityscapes, especially of Manchester. Which, in turn, led to the Works of Lowry.
Exceptional is the right word - both for the models physique and in the artists ability to capture.this so well

DeletePeter.
I wouldn't have guessed that connection, either, lol.

ReplyDeleteValette's cityscapes are interesting, but so distant from his academic work.
