1868 I
We seem to have a contemplative Discobolus in this work by Honore Berard from 1868.
I have to say that our model looks to be in top muscular form here.
I am in awe of the marvelous skills and talents of the artists. I have enough trouble navigating the drawing of a stick figure. These guys are amazing.
An amazing set! I am drawn to this one in particular, absolutely beautiful. And as you pointed out he is in top form. I would be curious to know what kind of work he did to maintain that physique.
We'll probably never know. It would be interesting if someone at the Ecole des Beaux Artes kept records of who the models were. We have the dates and artists, so it could be possible.

Right. And remember, they were still students when they made these.

DeleteUtterly gorgeous. Drawn with a love of the nude human form. He is using that left arm and hand to stop his head moving. Neat...
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought he was meant to be contemplative. Practicality reigns.
