Here we see George O'Brien with fellow Irish-American Spenceer Tracy. Blessed with a pleasant voice and the ability to nuance it on camera, Mr. O'Brien made the transition from silent to taking pictures with no trouble whatsoever. I think these two looked hot together.
They do look really good and comfortable together.
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
DeleteGreat photo. Interesting ways to hold one's pants up.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if those were typical at the time.
Deleteit is probably a (red) tie, the fashion was after Hemingway's book "The Sun Also Rises"
DeleteAccording to the Scotty Bower’s book, Spencer Tracy was known to like the boys, too. I’m sure they were both married as was the practice in those days.
ReplyDeleteAccording to Bower's, Spencer Tracy had to be quite drunk to go for men. And yes, both were married. Geoge O'Brien was married from 1933 to 1948 and never remarried after his divorce.
DeleteThey do look like a happy couple. I have read that both of their marriages were what was referred to in those days as twilight tandems or lavender coverups.
ReplyDeleteI've heard the term "beard" used in reference to those marriages.
DeleteIt was said the Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn ‘relationship’ was a cover to protect Hepburn’s film-career as it was rumored she was lesbian. Similar to the situation with Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck. You think the public at the time would have had a more mature attitude about the personal lives of others.
DeleteThe public at that time was not known for being tolerant or socially progressive.
DeleteI'm sure they are sex partners
