Discus
I have no less than three photos of this impressive statue,
The statue and other images you have were popular Roman copies in marble of the Discophoros (Discus-Bearer), a bronze sculpture by the classical Greek sculptor Polyclitus. There are numerous variants of the statue. Polyclitus has two other famous statues (with lots of Roman marble copies) of young, muscular men - the Diadumenos (diadem-bearer), and the Doryphoros (spear bearer). Polyclitus was trying to create the ideal human form in sculpture. Most marble copies, like your photo, feature the addition of a marble tree stump – marble is weaker but heavier than bronze. The stump is needed for support.
Does his extended hand seem a bit large? Though other parts of him are classically small.
ReplyDeleteJust a bit, but not grotesquely so.
