Fig Leaves, Part 2 - Eugen Sandow

Part two of our fig leaf double feature shows off the amazing Eugen Sandow,
a heartthrob for both men and women in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
Here, as usual, he looks like a finely sculpted hunk of marble.

  1. What a body... As before, we might speculate as to how the fig leaf was fastened. I'm thinking a thin cord along the top of the, I suspect cloth leaf. This was tied round the top of his penis and scrotum. I think a second cord through the centre of the "leaf" fastened to the first cord, to stop any "flapping". One day I'll get to experiment with these.

    1. You know, it seems like somebody, sometime would have described in detail how they did this. Your theory is as sound as any I've seen and makes more sense than most.

    2. I'm hoping somewhere, perhaps in a theatre costume techniques book?

  2. There’s an old theatrical adhesive called spirit gum that has been used for at least a century to glue on fake beards, mustaches, etc. it was probably used to glue that fig leaf to his penis.

On another tangent, I’ve read that Sandler was closeted. He was supposedly married, but rarely saw his wife. She was supposed to have publicly complained about this unwanted estrangement, especially since he had an assistant who went everywhere with him. I’ve only read about this on one site a while ago, with no real attribution. I’m not sure if it was merely gossip.

    1. There is more than one reputable source of evidence that Sandow liked men at least as much as women. His wife was observed at the time of his death burning all his personal letters, and she didn't bother to put a tombstone on his grave despite having the money. That assistant you mention was a musical accompanist from Sandow's stage show who eventually went on to teach piano in a smallish midwestern US city where he complained that none of the men in town wanted to take lessons from him. There's more, but you get the picture.

  3. Spirit gum adhesive has been used for centuries in the theater world. Considering Sandow’s shows could easily be seen as theatrical events, that’s probably what he used to attach the fig leaf to his penis.
