Out of its time
This looks like a mid-20th Century grappling physique pose, a point in time
at which the posing strap had long since replaced the fig leaf. I have to say,
however, that the art work is detailed and delicate. The man is nice, too.
Jerry, were these drawn cover-ups for purposes of legality or morality,or both? Naked males were not a big deal back then, at least in all-male company. Were these fig leaves, etc. drawn on to spare delicate females the frightening sight of a penis?
In the case of this photo, which I think was made about 1950, it was for legal reasons. The other photos in this series were much older and the leaves were probably put on them to preserve the modesty of the models, many of whom were well known sports or stage figures. Some of these were probably even promotional photos for their careers. The photographers of the early 20th C. had no problem showing the packages of professional models and laborers who posed.
Close Brian, but Leo Maryck is the guy in this photo. AND the fig leaf is painted on, there are original full frontal photos of him floating around on the internet. He’s also manscaped; look at the lack of any hair on his arms and legs. That’s what bodybuilders have been doing for decades.
Hey Greggy, you're absolutley right. He looked familiar and I lazily took the word of my facial recognition. It's Leo alright. I didn't realise just how much he looked like Stan. Well spotted!

DeleteAt least this one has a suggestion of the shape of what it is covering. Very smooth too. Perhaps additional retouching to remove any bush?
ReplyDeleteWouldn't surprise me at all if there were more work done on this one than just the leaf.
DeleteUpon enlargement, the area above the leaf (where his bush should be) looks recently shaved. (Perhaps a forerunner to that dreaded manscaping fad.)
DeleteSorry, I am the "Unknown"; I was using another email account.
DeleteNo worries, Jim. Shaving would have been rare at that time, but I have seen instances of it.
DeleteThis rather handsome fellow is Stan Stanczyck.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Brian!

ReplyDeleteAnd as most of you have figured out, he’s a Douglas of Detroit model.
