1941

Mr. Bonnet was still looking good here, three years after winning Mr. World.  Note that he spells his name Emil in the printed signature.  Most references I've found spell it Emile, with one of those being that well curated archive of bodybuilding history, Muscle Memory.

  1. That high waisted look started at this time and would persist even into the early 1950s. The patterned material - probably a lined, printed cotton for its sheen - is novel this early. Glenn Bishop, however, with his Hawaii print, mail order bikini, would launch it into popularity later in the 1950s.

    1. I wonder if the high waisted look was a lingering bit of the feeling that showing one's navel was gauche.
