Mr. Roberts
I sometimes start a dedicated photographer series with a photo of the artist, but this time
I decided to end with Mr. Roberts and his Rolleiflex in the California countryside.
Information at the beginning of the second "Mel Roberts Videograph"** says that after his military service he did some posing for an advanced sculpture class at the La Jolla Museum of Art. There are a couple of photos of him accompanying that bit of information. **Apparently a 'videograph' is someone's idea of what to call it when you put still images on video with a music soundtrack. I have four one-hour volumes of "Mel Roberts Classic Males" videos. They are on DVD, but are copied from VHS tapes, so quality is poor. --Tom
Mel Roberts / Melvin Richard Kells (1923-2007) Army Air Corps in WW2 graduate of the UCLA film school 1950 - music editor on the black-listed film "Salt of the Earth" 1953. -Photo career 1959-1980. Ended by police harassment, Mel deserved better. His archive of materials was auctioned in 2010. Google Mel Roberts gay or photography to get info. Fluxion has pics, a portrait 1950s and him sitting in a chair during war service. Menvintage various pics of Mel from the 50s. Homobilia the photo above and Mel and a model in front of a cabin/ good write-up Elisa Rolle/Queerplaces Portrait and back story. Finda Grave- Mel standing in his driveway with an early 60s red Corvair conv. maybe his car and a pic from his final years. -Rj inthe IE
Hell, HE'S pretty damned good looking himself. Did he do any posing?
ReplyDeleteNot that I know of. This is the only photo of him I could find.

I agree with Big Dude, Mr. Roberts was a handsome fellow. I've been enjoying this weeks series but today's was exceptional. Thanks again, Jerry.

You're welcome, Peter. Mr. R is indeed handsome, and I'd love to have a belt like his.

By marriage, he's my 8th cousin. Wait a day and you should be able to see on Wikitree if you are related to him.
DeleteThanks, Jim. The findagrave bio was an eye opener. What a POS the LAPD was!
