I really like the mirror effect in this photo of Charles Berendo,
but I can't help but wonder if that is a cut or scar on his hip.

Yes, it's a scar. The blogspot Male Models Vintage Beefcake has a photo of Charles on his back and it shows the scar clearly. I don't know how to email it to you or I would send it myself.
When I enlarge the photo, the dark line appears raised. So I would call it a scar. But it could be a raised subcutaneous vein.
