Wierd one

I've had this picture for years and have never figured out what those striped balls are
supposed to be.  Hot air balloons?  Planets?  Maybe they are simply striped balls.
Oh, and is it just me, or is his left hand grotesquely oversized?

  1. If this photo is a Rorschach test, I see a baseball glove on the man's left hand and shell fish floating underwater on the canvas behind him. Will have to bring this up on the next visit to my psychiatrist.

  2. How bizarre. The French did indeed produce hot air balloons with vertical stripes, but there's no basket beneath and they are flying horizontally. And then there appear to be hooded figures writhing in the background. I think this must be a tableau vivant on some obscure subject. Perhaps he's about to be abducted by aliens from Zeta Reticuli star system. (It's apparently where they come from...)

    1. So those round things are space ships from Zeta Reticuli?

  3. I think his left hand moved during the exposure. This is fabulous. A stunning physique. Glorious tache. He looks a little familiar? Or is it just the look of several models of that period? And posing atop a stepladder. Sea anemones?

    1. I think you're correct about his hand. And thanks for mentioning his physique. It tends to get overlooked, what with the bizarre background.

  4. My initial reaction is that his left hand is holding one of those striped balls floating around. Or maybe his hand is positioned to look like it's holding a ball. The stripes on the ball seem synchronized with his fingers, which would give the appearance of a "grotesquely oversized" left hand.
