Classic Surfboard
I don't think George O'Brien made a surfing movie, so these two photos may be an examples of the "stars at leisure" genre of publicity pictures. That board would be worth a fortune if it's still around.
Surferboy O’Brien certainly has the wood ! He must have been propositioned at the beach many times. Wonder what type of wood was used in the longboards of the 1920’s and 1930’s. A surfer would give his eye teeth for that board today.:)
Wood from the koa tree was (and still is) used to make classic boards here in Hawaii. This might be one of many known to have been taken to California.
Thank you ! Had a relative who took up surfing in Hawaii while serving in the USMC during WW2. He had a longboard like this and kept surfing until fiberglass boards came along and longboarders were mocked as old-fashioned.
Nice bulge in those trunks, eh?
ReplyDeleteYes, nice.
DeleteHe definitely been able to hold his own in all those surf and beach movies of the '60's.
ReplyDeleteI can't help but think they would have been better with him in them.
