Rare

Color work by Douglas of Detroit is comparatively rare,
but it was very good when he chose to do it.

  1. The lighting really highlights his torso. Not a complaint! More noticeable oil here. Is is because it's in colour, or due to the lighting?

    1. Both probably, but I give the nod to color for most impact because it allows more contrast with the background.

  2. No doubt a fine specimen Juleff discovered at a bodybuilding competition, at the famous Yacos gym in Detroit or one of many barbell clubs in Michigan popular at that time….:)

    1. Mr.Juleff started out doing publicity stills and magazine material for bodybuilders, so I think you are spot on with your comment.

  3. These early colour ones are rather special. A directness, colouring often revealing more body detail than b&w. If a competition guy, good to see the whole natural body unencumbered with posing trunks.

    1. How could he not compete with a body like that? Surely he won some prizes.

  4. Beautiful color physique portrait, a
daring full nude for the time.
This bodybuilder must of known he would be in good hands with Juleff, a photographer he could have trust in. Of course at the time Juleff was well known to bodybuilders in Michigan and the Midwest for his professionalism. It seems full nudes were common in the 1940s and increasingly suppressed starting in the 1950s.
It is terrible that so much of Juleff’s work was destroyed due to ignorance and intolerance. Love his rare color photo work….:)

    1. Oddlly, "legitimate" photos by Mr. Juleff of bodybuilders are hard to find, and it's well known that he did more than a few.
