Tennis and Showr
Skimpy attire for sports seems to have been de rigeur for Mr. O'Brien as seen above
on the tennis court. He wasn't afraid to show bulges, either there or in the shower below.
Outdoor showers were often for coming back from the beach/ pool or doing outdoor activities so you didn’t bring the dirt/ sand in the house. Of course someone may have just wanted to see him in a shower in his skivvies.

If the photographer hadn't been there, he may or may not have ditched the shorts.
