Keeping clean in wartime
Today we look at various ways soldiers kept clean in wartime.
This U.S. Army propaganda poster had to have been made by a gay man.
I agree with Anonymous. Men in those days were not concerned with taking showers or swimming naked. I think the late 60s-early 70s were when it started being "a thing."
The South was more prudish, TBH, especially since segregation was already masquerading as religion, e.g. SBC, Bob Jones.
The Midwest less so. Some of the last nude YMCAs are in the industrial Midwest. Places like Sheboygan, Columbus, and Minneapolis.
In rural areas, the nudity, and "no girls allowed" protocol, is still there, but typically more confined to ponds and streams either on your property or far enough away.
I should have been more specific. I meant that the South was less prudish in terms of guys showering or swimming nude together. In almost every other way, the South was indeed more prudish. We had some visitors from New England at our Texas ranch around 1975, and they were shocked that the men swam nude together.
Male nudity wasn't seen as a sex thing back then.
