Jared French or PaJaMa?

This is Jared French, a well known painter whose art I've featured here on the blog.  He was also a very good photographer; so good in fact that a number of his works are in the Smithsonian photo archive.  Due to his membership in the PaJaMa collective during his three way marriage with his wife Margaret Hoening and his male lover Paul Cadmus, attribution of his photographic work is somewhat confusing.  Most observers, however, feel that the great bulk of PaJaMa's photographic work was done by French with some help from Hoening and Cadmus.  So today we look at a mix of that work.  This photo of Jared French is attributed to PaJaMa, but he may well have taken it himself.

  1. His tan shows even in b&w. The setting and atmosphere are really great, the pose beautiful. Thanks, Jerry. Great picture!

    1. Yes, this one is quite atmospheric. See my response to Greggy below for my take on his tan.

  2. Very moody composition. His obvious tan without tan lines throws out more questions, especially in the 1940's. The artistic intent of this creative group seems to ask more questions than answers. Three way/threesome marriages are known to be highly creative arrangements.

    1. There are so many nude photos of French himself in the Smithsonian collection that he could well have gotten an all over tan just posing, lol. Actually, French, Cadmus, and Hoening spent a lot of time at places like Fire Island and Martha's Vineyard where one could sunbathe nude if one were discrete and kept it to certain locations. The threesome did indeed experience a very creative period while together.
