1884 . . . and some questions


Sulpis appears again here on the left with a version by Patricot on the right.  Several questions arise in my mind in relation to these drawings.  First, there's the date.  Was Sulpis still in school two years later still doing essentially the same sort of exercise as in the preceding photo?  Second, is it the same model in both versions . . . and the same model from the 1882 drawings?  Finally, why is one guy's foot on a clean block of wood and the other's on a rough rock?

  1. Interesting. Perhaps he repeated it as he particularly like this type of pose? His technique seems to have developed. A superb model like this may well have been a regular? I suspect the "rock" was just to give the work a more "finished" look.
