Hercules again
Hercules is handling a different kind of snake this time.
This is a marble statue dating from the first century that was unearthed in the vast gardens of a wealthy Roman living in Herculaneum. Like Pompeii, the city was buried in ash from the explosion of Mt Vesuvius in 79 AD. It is said to portray a drunken Hercules. Whimsical statues of Hercules were often used in garden settings during the Hellenistic era.
I have a large framed photo of this statue installed in my bathroom. First time visitors never fail to comment on it after they exit the room.
Astounding! I've seen Greek ceramics showing male intercourse and masturbation, but never a statue of ANY character masturbating! Cool!
ReplyDeleteI think he's supposed to be peeing, probably while drunk.
DeleteRobert is correct. He is having a pee while drunk.
