Umbrella
According to the Smithsonian curators, appearing under an umbrella
in early 20th C. photos was indicative of being in a romantic relationship.
The umbrella-thing is new to me, but immediately accepted. Somehow makes perfect sense!
However, notice how one of them is not exactly sitting in the other's lap, but their legs are definately crossed? All the way back to 17th century paintings of (straight and fully clothed) couples, crossed legs symbolise (sexual) 'relations'.
The one on the right is very Wildean. I love the striped shirt and starched collar. Very much men-about-town.
ReplyDeleteYes, dapper, but sweetly casual at the same time.
