Military Men

It's military day, and we start the show with some World War I
Germans in a very large shower at Contrai, France.

  1. Largely as a result of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, France had, I believe, the largest number of men under arms of any country in Europe. (At the time, the British Royal Navy was the largest, hence British hesitation in joining a land war, hence conscription for the fist time.) These showers at Contrai - in the Gironde - would mirror many others in their lavish instalments - and as we can see, lavish they were.

    1. I recall reading somewhere that most of these men had never seen a shower before entering the military.

    2. A shower they had finally seen but deodorant was still an unknown commodity to the French populace.

    3. At least a shower is a good start.
