Today will look at some classic poses that were used both in mid-20th Century physique photography and in mid-19th Century Academic art. This photo of Frankie Russell was unattributed by my source but it looks a lot like it came from a series by Bob Delmonteque.
I think it's safe to say that this has Delmonteque all over it. This is the pose and style that Bob went for when he modeled.
ReplyDeleteI like the palm tree-model-sky juxtaposition. Is that also something that would be typical of Delmontique? Not necessarily those three elements, that is.
ReplyDeleteMost of the photos made by Delmonteque, as opposed to made of him, were done after he moved to California, so the sky/palm/model motif naturally came into his style. A lot of the California photographers used similar arrangements at times, as did Don Whitman of Western Photography Guild who used it frequently.
DeleteGreat series Jerry. The influence of particularly the 19th century academic ideal is so often there.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed it, David, and thanks for your intelligent comments and observations.
DeleteAs ever, my pleasure.
