Arthru Mayeur (left) and Charles Germain must have sat next to each other in class to have such
closely similar poses.  Note the difference in the wooden block the model leans on.

  1. All these males would have done well as models for the Greeks or Romans, with their small equipment.

  2. Regarding the differences in blocks and other props, a creative and talented draftsman could easily take liberties with such, and with the model proper as well.

    1. I wasn't sure that was "allowed," but it makes sense.

    2. I think it would be in more advanced classes. Personally I like to see the life class equipment included.

  3. ...or the professional model was on the same standard posing position on different years, this explain not only the different posing props but also slight differences on the model haircut.
Normally the art academies uses the have a set of models for several years.
this could explain the small differences on the 4 sets.

    1. Oh, they absolutely used the same models over spans of years, and the fact is well documented by both the visual record and written descriptions. My sources, however, dated all of todays paired drawings as being from the same year. They might have one dated wrongly, though. I think the relative lack of differences overall is amazing.
