Tibor and Brian
I love it when they tell you right on the picture who's in it and who took it.
For the nearsighted, it's Tibor Urgay and Brian Lamprill by Royale.
There was a hilarious movie in the 80s, A Private Function, about postwar austerity in which a local Councilman and his wife kept an illegal pig, hoping to serve it at a dinner celebrating the late Queen's wedding. My favorite scene in the whole film was when the overzealous local food inspector and ration warden charged into the town butcher shop where there was a queue. He shut down the place, pointing to a pile of meat and declaring, "This is horse!" An old lady, played brilliantly by Liz Smith, said, "I don't mind." Her friend in line behind her said, "Neither do I."
I can guarantee that this scene wasn't invented... My great-aunt, Lady Caroline, once had to bribe a window cleaner when he found half a goat marinating in a bath. "Yes, dears, it's perfectly edible - Mrs Voisey cooked it slowly."
Lovely stuff.
ReplyDeleteTruly a favorite.
DeleteAh, some austerity wrestling from Britain. You could still have some fun even if you didn't have the coupons for a pair of trunks! Beautiful shot!

DeleteAnother great line from that movie, said by the wife (Maggie Smith): "Don't think of it as pork, think of it as power!"
DeleteI had forgotten that one, j.
DeleteJerry, Do you have any idea what year this photo was made.? Or what years ROYALE was active.?
DeleteLate 1950s, but that's just a guess.
DeleteAnd in case it isn't clear which is which, it's Brian above with dark hair and Tibor below.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Brian!
