Buffing a bum

George Silk took this 1945 photo on Iwo Jima of fighter pilots getting massages.
I find it amazing that such amenities could be provided in the midst of war,
and as for the masseurs, it had to be great work if  you could get it!

  1. This one come as a surprise. I had no idea "rub downs," as they were called then, were offered.

  2. Something else is getting buffed on down the line...

    1. I'm glad you brought our attention to that. The towels are probably covering the good parts, but it sure gets my imagination going.

    2. How did I totally miss that? I must be losing my touch.

  3. Looking at this with fresh eyes, I see that the masseurs are also oiled, so maybe it was done an exchange basis. Sitting in a cramped cockpit, tense with adrenline, one's glutes and other "saddle muscles" get sore, so I can see why this attention was appreciated-Dee Exx

  4. Lactic acid builds up in the glutes, so they need massaging.
The bigger the glutes, more lactic acid builds up, a more intense massage is "kneaded" :)

  5. front to back:
"Ah, good he's finally patting my ass."
'I love when he rubs my ass "
"You guys are asses, for not lying on your back!"

    1. Right, we can't see what part of number three is getting rubbed.
