Winner
Our trophy holder was one of the winners at an early Muscle Beach competition.
If you look closely, you can see two weight discos at center right.
Bill "Peanuts" West, the founder of the Westside Barbell Club. He started weightlifting as a teenager when he was the proverbial 90lb weakling. He would eat peanuts every day for extra calories.
Can't help but notice the older guys behind the fence, no doubt gawking at the bodybuilders and weightlifters of muscle beach. Maybe even out and about for a hookup with a willing bodybuilder :)
I have this photo and have always wondered who this exceptional looking man was. Looking into his history was most interesting, apparently he died homeless in 1984 at the age of 47 on a beach in Santa Barbara. If that is true what a sad ending for a man who did so much to elevate and promote the sport. https://www.facebook.com/116733248412758/posts/bill-peanuts-west-william-weiss-was-a-powerlifting-champion-pioneer-born-in-1937/2313113535441374/

ReplyDeleteThanks for the ID, James! I've never heard of using peanuts for that purpose, but it makes sense.
DeleteHandsome s.o.b., and note the unshaven chest. And the grin.
ReplyDeleteHe looks devilishly charming.

ReplyDeleteThe City of Santa Monica eventually shut down Muscle Beach with some vague references to it being "unseemly."

Truly sad. I poked aroung a bit and couldn't find any explanation of how he ended up that way.
DeleteHe's got the balls not to be afraid, to show how small his pecker is!
ReplyDeleteHard not to notice.
DeleteA grower not a shower I suspect. It wouldn't matter I would say yes to him either way.
