Edwin Townsend did photograph models other than Tony Sansone,
I agree on all points of course, but it's the pose that stands out most to me. It was rather relaxed and casual for an era when most photos of this genre showed bodybuilders standing in competition positions.
The pose and lighting really make this work well. Of course, the male is what it's all about, and THAT works very well.
