Haircut

This photo is supposed to have come from a late 1960s magazine,
but that hair cut just doesn't fit somehow.  Military?

  1. Two observations. When I was doing my sportswear research, I noticed that on both sides of the Atlantic, many of the male athletes did in fact have then unfashionably short hair. This was down to the fact - as you surmise - that a goodly proportion of them were in fact in the military, being the one place a sportsman could get board and lodging and carte blanche to train full time. Secondly, because sports teams in general, but particularly athletics teams, were under much more discipline than today, and many coaches and sports club presidents thought that long hair equaled decadence and effeminacy. There was also a practical element - as I knew, running with long hair makes for a very hot and sweaty experience. The second option is that the model might well have been foreign. Northern Europeans - including the British - tended to have much longer hair than in Latin, Southern Europe, where long hair was adopted by a rebellious fringe and pop singers, and the majority wore their hair traditionally short.

    1. I know what you mean about the overlap between sports and the military. The football coach at my high school forced all the team members to get GI crew cuts.

  2. This model's name is Jac Jackson. I think he is Scandinavian - at least he has posed with Tore Lind, and in two photos he is wearing a sailor's cap with partially visible text: Stockholms. This is the genitive case for something from Stockholm, so one could imagine Swedish navy? All of this of course is conjecture.

    1. You are correct, as usual. I have other photos of him in partial navy regalia, and they are by Foto Grafo Studio of Sweden. I'm embarrassed to add that I even have this picture in my FG file clearly labeled "Jac Jackson."

    2. This one has been driving me nuts - I spent hours this morning going through the old files lol - it seemed to me he was one of those several models about that time with Tore Lind, Helmut Reidmeier, Finn Kohlert. Bo Swenson etc. - I seem to have read many years ago that Champion took a trip to Europe and photographed a number of guys particularly in the Scandanavian countries - many of them seem to be wearing Swedish navy pullovers and sailor caps - so - - I was spending time looking for him in the Champion files and didnt even think about FotoGrafo - there seem to be a number of Reidemeir pics by Champion and I'm thinking maybe he came back to the states with Walt - in any case, thanks for giving me a name to put to this picture!!

  3. Growing up in the military (both parents were career Air Force) I was familiar with all kinds of "military" haircuts. I know for certain that the Nato Benelux soldiers had hair as long as they wanted it throughout the 60's and 70's. Most of the other NATO countries had much more stringent hair length requirements. So that's probably not a Marine or Army haircut (from most countries) from any time period last century, it's a definitely a possibility for a soldier in the Air Force or Navy from other NATO countries back then.
