Pinup pose
The pose is borrowed from World War II pinup girls and a bit cliched,
but Bob Mizer of AMG did a great job on this shot of Bob.
Bob Mizer was clearly making a very definite and even provocative statement in putting Bob McCune in this pose. I have more than a sneaking regard for many of these straight bodybuilders and athletes who posed for openly gay photographers knowing to what purpose their work would be put - and perhaps demonstrates that societal disapproval of homosexuality was a social construct and not organic. Many of the models of this time were straight and didn't seem to give a damn.
Bob Mccune was one of the most handsome bodybuilders of his era. With his movie star looks, I could see him play in the film-noirs and westerns that were popular in the mid 40's to mid 50's. Shockingly he did not do to well in bodybuilding contests of the time. 1947 second at muscle beach, 1949 second pro mr america and second mr california where his best showings. He tried mr usa twice and never placed! Of course, in those years there was a lot of competition. -RJ in the IE
Not very heavily oiled, if at all. Yet his body glows. Interesting shadow pattern under his body. Did he ever smile?
ReplyDeleteYes, but not very often on camera from what I can tell.

ReplyDeleteWhat you say about some models not caring about their pictures being pitched to gays is true. Dan Lurie even joked about it in his memoire.
