Bellerophon
Here we have Bellerophon Fighting the Chimaera from the Austrian Belvedere Gallery as sculpted by Johann Schaller, 1821. Mr. Schaller went really Classical on the package for this one.
I am absolutely convinced that Schaller was inspired by the images of Mithras slaying the bull, which was depicted in every Mithraeum (Mithraic Temple). He has Bellerophon approaching the chimaera likewise from the left and is also aiming at the neck. Bellerophon is also caped but is helmeted, whereas Mithras was always depicted wearing the Phrygian cap.
Das Belveder ist so schone. Wien hat viele wunderbare Museen und ist anspruchsvoll, wir vergleichen uns mit Paris! Die Skulptur repraesentiert fur mich Osterreichs Willenskraft. -austriche
