This is Samson Slaying a Phillistine by 16th C. Flemish Sculptor Jean Boulogne,
aka Giambologna, who worked for the Medici family in Italy.  From the V&A in London.

  2. Go in the main entrance, pass the lobby desk and staying on the ground floor, turn to the right. It was there one very crowded afternoon to the consternation of those around us that a friend of mine in a very loud voice declared this to be "the best arse in London".

  3. The Philistine must be in the running for second-best arse. Visible in other photos on the V&A website and worth seeking out.

  4. I would love to have been involved with interviewing the models. Fine derriere! (Sagebrush Dan)

    1. I was thinking the same thing. Failing that, I wonder if Boulogne allowed observers in the studio.

  5. I wasn't at all interested in the rear end, but what I immediately thought was the view that the Phillistine had. It would be the last thing he saw, but there definitely could be worse last sights.

    1. I do have photos of the other side of the sculpture. Perhaps I should post one in the next appropriate series.
