I'm not at all convinced that he's even wearing a jockstrap, but whatever it is does have
some good qualities. The jumprope and gladiator sandals add a bit of interest, too.
You've shown several photos of strongmen/circus performers around the turn of the last century who were wearing a kind of performance thong. With those sandals that are similar to those worn by boxers/wrestlers (during the same time period), I'm going with your explanation.
Those gladiator sandals made a blessedly brief comeback in women's fashion a few years ago. I think it was because Heidi Klum said she liked them on "Project Runway."
The "jockstrap" is a classical dance belt, worn historically and in the present day by classical male dancers. It is often padded, not only to cover any genital details but also to give a larger appearance. This fellow seems to have gone a bit overboard with the padding... but maybe not!
Thanks for the explanation, Jim. It makes sense and is also a bit incongruous to think of strong men using padded dance outfits along with gladiator sandals.

DeletePerhaps this fellow actually was a ballet dancer and the sandals were part of his costume?
DeleteAnything is possible in the world of entertainment, lol.
