Barracks Hijinks
Are these French soldiers in their barracks making some sort of fashion
statement with all those scarves? I totally expected the berets, though.
Everything the French wear tends to become a fashion statement. It's the only country in the world where their leading designers are asked to create police and military uniforms. Each succeeding New Look gets a slot on the national evening news and an obligingly cute cop or soldier of all ranks comes on and takes a twirl for the téléspectateurs. I think these "scarves" are in fact stocks worn under an open-necked shirt and which were worn in the South - and Algeria - during the Summer heat.
Thanks for the explanation. During an extended visit to Paris once, I was told by my host that a prominent fashion model fell asleep on the Metro and woke up with terribly disarranged hair. After being recognized walking from the Metro station to her flat, hundreds (and later thousands) of women were seen all over Paris with the same wrecked hair.

DeleteI nearly disturbed the neighbours laughing at that. So true. Yes, la mode française is not so much about design but cloning.
DeleteDid the French soldiers have a uniform? Where then, they were trying to seduce the opponents ... LOL
ReplyDeletePerhaps better than shooting them, no?
