Greeks
These are the Riace Warriors, two 5th Century B.C.E. bronzes found
in the Mediterranean in 1972 off the coast of Riace Marina, Italy.
They are discernibly Greek from the beards. At that date, Rome had not yet expanded and there were any number of Greek Colonies in that part of Italy. They are utterly stunning.

ReplyDeleteThe Greeks really knew their sculpture, and the technology for the bronze work was impressive.
DeleteThese two always impress. Although idealised bodies and stylised features...they almost breathe. Extremely moving and inspiring.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, and I find the one at right to be exceptionally lifelike.
DeleteThey are very life like. In that, they connect us with their world.
