November - Derek Bottomley

Do you think that's his real name?  Did they even know
the connotations in 1955 when this was made?

  1. I'd say the Brits would have known, but maybe not the Yanks.

  2. As someone raised in the UK, I can attest to the fact that this sort of last name is not unusual. I'm not saying it is his real name but it's by no means a stretch for it to be his actual name.

    1. Thanks for the clarification. I've spent a lot of time in the UK and should have known that.

  3. I'd say it was his real name. The UK Bottomley's that I'm most aware of are Peter and Virginia Bottomley - a married couple who were both Conservative MPs in the 1980s and '90s. .

  4. Jerry, it is most certainly an English surname, coming from Old English, from the place name formed by combining geographic terms "Bottom" and "Ley (landform)", and which refers to two small settlements each on opposite sides of a hill near Walsden and Halifax, West Yorkshire. It first appears in written records from 1277.

  5. His pouch looks like it needs medical attention, but I do like his surname.

    1. I'm sure you'd give him all the attention he needs, just to be helpful.
