Early work
Although not a student work, this 1923 drawing was done very early in Allyn Cox's career.
It looks unfinished, but it's still beautifully drawn.
I find each of these remarkable on its own merit. His understanding of the male body shows in the details in each work. Are there any self-portraits showing him naked? It would be interesting to see how he perceived and portrayed himself.
I haven't been able to find a self portrait at all, never mind a nude one. I thought I had found one, but it was by his mother! The style was much like his.
What with the facial expression, I first thought that this was a study of a man under water. I agree - the musculature is truly impressive.
ReplyDeleteI thought of him being submerged, too, or else there's some ethereal about it.

DeleteGorgeous. Flying maybe? Excellent, notoriously difficult to draw back. And those feet...great stuff.
ReplyDeleteFlying does come to mind . . . and leaves me wanting to know the context.
