Padstow

Here we have a late 19th Century lifeboat crew (and supporters) from Padstow, Cornwall.  I've been to Padstow half a dozen times, and I can tell you there are still hundreds of such good looking men ambling about.  I even made it once for their insane Mayday festival, the 'Obby 'Oss, aka Hobby Horse.  Now that was a party that I'll never forget, and I lived in New Orleans for eight years!

  1. Cornwall My Home

I’ve stood on Cape Cornwall in the sun’s evening glow,
On Chywoone Hill at Newlyn to watch the fishing fleets go,
Watched the sheave wheels at Geevor as they spun around,
And heard the men singing as they go underground.

And no one will ever move me from this land,
Until the Lord calls me to sit at his hand,
For this is my Eden, and I’m not alone,
For this is my Cornwall and this is my home.

I’ve left childish footsteps in the soft Sennen sand,
I’ve chased the maids there, all giggly and tanned,
I’ve stood on the cliff top in a westerly blow,
And heard the waves thunder on the rocks far below,

And no one will ever move me from this land,
Until the Lord calls me to sit at his hand,
For this is my Eden, and I’m not alone,
For this is my Cornwall and this is my home.

First thing in the morning, on Chapel Carn Brea,
To gaze at the Scillies in the blue far away,
For this is my Cornwall, and I’ll tell you why,
Because I was born here and here I shall die.

    1. Thanks for posting this lovely poem, Julian. I love Cornwall and have been there at least a dozen times. I've even been to the Isles of Scilly! There will always be a warm spot in my heart for a certain Cornish farmer I met in my younger single days.

    2. It is indeed a poem but it is also a song. The Fisherman's Friends (after a toxic throat lozenge taken for sore throats - hence the dry West Country wit) who are a male singing group of Cornish fishermen (now on their second film) made a beautiful recording of it. You can find it readily on the usual platforms. It was a big hit for them.

    3. And indeed a beautiful song as well, now on my play list. The Celtic heritage of Cornwall comes through to those of us who know. Thank you, my friend.

  2. I love the wearable xylophone jackets. Stylish, musical, and potentially a lifesaving mechanism as the wooden keys would make the wearer float.

    1. From my experience I'd say at least some of the men around Padstow are musical.

    2. "Musical?" Do tell (and I know what that means).

    3. Yeah, a very friendly Cornish farmer, and he told me he had friends nearby who were musical, too.
