Sheldon "Bugs" Deal

I'd love to know how "Bugs" Deal got his nickname, and there are two I find interesting about this photo.  First, it was dated 1958 and may have been one of the frontal nudes that got Frank Collier arrested for obscenity in 1959.  Second, the sea grass checkerboard mat he is standing on is very similar to one we see often in Bruce of LA's work.  I'm sure they made huge numbers of those things, but what are the chances that they would show up in physique photos from opposite ends of the continent?

  1. Jerry, I see The Shadow on his right thigh! This man is really outstanding, and it's sad to think this beautiful photo might have contributed to Mr. Collier's arrest.

  2. I don't mind the sea grass mat - although it does look like Silvio Berlusconi's hair transplant - but the Rapunzel's Tower backdrop is a bit disconcerting for so stunning a model... with such short hair. It is hideous to think that this might have led to Frank Collier's arrest.

    1. You're right about the backdrop. It looks like a stage set from a not very talented high school drama club. I need to research that arrest some more. I seem to recall there was something out of the ordinary about it. Truly hideous, no matter the interesting details.

    2. The ones on the wall, the other pair don't make noise when you shake them!.... ;-)

  4. Bugs Deal had a good, natural physique. Good frontal nude by Collier and far from obscene. You think his prosecutors would have been busy going after real criminals:(. As for the mats, they were ubiquitous back then, we had them in our family's breezeway/patio room in So Cal. My folks got them at the Akron back in the day....:)

  5. This is wonderful. Did he get lost? But what a splendid physique.

  6. Periodically it's good to experience "takes my breath away" moments. Mr. Deal is stunning in his masculine beauty and proportions. By the way, I like how "Men From Back Then" blog complements yours insofar as I can look up other pictures of models that you post here. I suppose you know this already. Many thanks for your fine work.
