This statue of a young satyr is frome the Second Century. For some reason he's holding up a small ball and not a cup of wine. He does, however, have a bunch of grapes in full view. And ends my set from the Capitoline Museum. If there is interest, I have a lot more photos from my visit for later.
Looks festive. I think one of the other statues today (emperor’s head on a different body) is also holding a ball.
ReplyDeleteYes, I should have mentioned that if I didn't.
DeleteAll these statues have what I have come to think of as "classical cocks," which would figure...but still kind of sad. Our cocks have been considered something to be ashamed of. I am glad we have gotten beyond that, and can show them as they are naturally.
ReplyDeleteIf the size were a matter of shame, I don't think they would have shown them at all. It was just a different aesthetic for gods and people prominent enough to be featured in statues. The Greeks and Romans both prominently displayed large phalluses as sort of neighborhood talismans.
DeleteYes, interested in more! Thanks!
