Mid-19th Century Double Feature, Part 2 - Degas' Male Nude Art

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was working as a successful artist when Marconi was still actively
publishing photographic studies for artists.  Given the similarities in the works above, we have
to wonder if Degas used or saw some of Marconi's photos.  Or was it just coincidence?
Part two of our double feature shows some of Degas' male nudes.

Painting

This was the only example I could find of a male nude color painting by Degas.

Incomplete

Although it looks incomplete, this drawing is perhaps a preview ofDegas' later
Impressionist tendencies.  And then there's that extraneous arm in the corner.

Interesting pose

Although not totally unique, I think the pose of this model stands out from the usual.

1856-58

I found this labeled as "Academic Study, 1856-58."  As such, it would have come at the
end of Degas' training period.  That's believable given the skill level, especially the shading.
