This photo of Tony Sansone with a piece of rope 

in front of a mirror gets a 10 on the bush scale.

This fellow is standing in front of a mirror,

but he's not looking at himself.

 

Aces Up

Aces Up was the title of the publication by Nova in which this photo appeared in 1985.

At least that's what my source said.  I thought Nova made movies in the 80s.

 

1983

Man with Media Equipment from 1983 reminds me of a Playgirl 

photo shoot, only without the orange haze.

 

Mirror

Edwin Townsend did about half a dozen photos of Tony Sansone using angled mirrors to present different aspects in one shot.  They were apparently all done in one session, and I'm left wondering if they were the inspiration for some later photographers' use of mirrors.  Remember, much of the duo's body of work was published, apparently without legal consequences, in the 1920s and 30s.

 

State of the Art 1983

Challenging and artistic

In addition to being quite challenging for the model, I find this photo to be artistic.

 

Jensen Yow

I really like the mirror effect in this photo of Jensen Yow, but I'm not sure about the provenance.  It came to me labeled PaJaMa, 1950, but I'm not sure they were still calling themselves that by then.

 

Selfie with Charles

It's said that Robert Mapplethorpe didn't set out to do a selfie with Charles,

but ended up in the picture and liked it that way.  From 1974.

 

1941 Smithsonian

This unknown (at least to me) model appears in a number of the PaJaMa photos

 in the Smithsonian's collection.  They range from the very artistic, as here, 

to some hastily done items that are almost shabby.

 

Dave Shawn

I'm ending the Scott Masters series as we began, with a mirror shot.

This time the model is a happy looking Dave Shawn.

 

Charles

I really like the mirror effect in this photo of Charles Berendo,

but I can't help but wonder if that is a cut or scar on his hip. 

 

Hank Strothers

The mirror gives us a second lovely view of Hand Strothers and his towel.

 

Jay Howard

The anonymous donor of this photo knew the model was Jay Howard 

and that the picture was taken by Mel Roberts for an unnamed magazine.

It's one of those "best of both worlds" shots a lot of us like.

 

David

I started to call this composite of David Miller a twofer, but it's actually a threefer if we 

count the mirror shot as two.  I have a hunch this is by DSI, but no documentation.

 

Terry

Terry Redpath did a rather extensive "at home" series for Don Whitman.

We'll see that dresser again later in today's set with a different model.

Lynes, the middle part

I really like the effect the mirror provides in this undated Lynes photo of Ted Starkowski.

This is the only photo of Ted and Chuck Howard that I could find that was 

attributed to George Platt Lynes.  I'm not completely sure about the attribution, 

but the bench does match at least one other Lynes photo in my collection.

 

Unknown model in mirror

Much of the material that Margaret Hoening French donated to the Smithsonian following her husband Jared French's death could be categorized as photographic sketches or rough studies.  Many of those works, however, do have their own artistic value.  This example would be one of those.
